ESG rating agencies should be regulated
With a "targeted consultation", the EU Commission would like to gain a better insight into the functioning of the ESG ratings market. In our response, we point out that companies are confronted with a variety of different methodologies and partly non-transparent ESG rating agency assessment criteria. We therefore call for legal standards for ESG rating providers, such as transparency obligations or a registration requirement with supervisory authorities.
On the other hand, we also draw attention to the fact that too strict rules for ESG rating providers could ultimately lead to market concentration - similar to the market for credit ratings. The EU Commission must therefore strike an appropriate balance in the further legislative process.
