Post European Elections: Swiftly advancing the completion of the Capital Markets Union and strengthening competitiveness

In the weeks following the European elections, the EU Parliament and the EU Commission will undergo restructuring. Deutsches Aktieninstitut hopes that both institutions will prioritize strengthening the European capital market. This includes a lively equity culture and leaner and more efficient legislation. 

Financing the sustainable and digital transformation is one of the many challenges that are likely to be on the agenda of the new EU Parliament and the new EU Commission in the next legislative period. ‘The successful mobilisation of private capital is essential for financing the enormous investments required to tackle these future tasks,’ emphasises Henriette Peucker, Member of the Management Board of Deutsches Aktieninstitut.

New Momentum for the Capital Markets Union

In order to strengthen Europe's competitiveness and increase our prosperity, we need deep and broad capital markets. ‘A vibrant equity culture, in which citizens make greater provision for their retirement and wealth accumulation with shares, funds and other securities and thus benefit from the attractive returns of equity investments in the long term, is also of central importance,’ emphasises Peucker.

Deutsches Aktieninstitut therefore welcomes the fact that several initiatives, such as the report by former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on the future of the single market, are providing new momentum to strengthen the European capital markets and securities savings. ‘The EU Parliament, Commission and member states should definitely utilise the new momentum for the Capital Markets Union in the interests of European citizens and companies,’ says Peucker.

Ensure attractive and practical framework conditions

Competitiveness also means getting serious about reducing bureaucracy. ‘We need a good dialogue between politics and business so that a practical balance can be struck between transparency, clarity and complexity,’ says Peucker. ‘We are happy to take the Commission at its word, which announced in spring 2023 that it wanted to reduce companies’ reporting obligations by 25 percent."
